Danbury Wildlife Education: How To Inspect A House For Rodent Entry Holes

If you have a rodent problem in your home, it is essential that you find the animals’ entry points. To completely take care of the rodent infestation, you will need to seal up all of the entry points and remove the rodents. Only then can you be sure that no more rodents will come into your house in the future. For most people, the prospect of finding all the entry holes can be incredibly daunting, but the proper advice can help.

Hire A Professional
The easiest option for finding all rodent entry holes in your home is to hire a professional. They will know which areas are most likely to have these entrances or which will be in use. They can also recognize the signs of rodent entry, such as grease and droppings. Professionals are also comfortable climbing ladders in search of entry points so you don’t have to worry about safety while examining the second story or roof of your home.

Check Seals, Vents, And Windows
If you plan on inspecting your house for rodent entry points yourself, then you will want to follow the same techniques that experts use. Start by making sure that all vents, windows, doors, pipes, and similar items have a tight seal on every side. Remember that rodents can fit in a very small hole, anything that is a quarter across in diameter or larger needs to be sealed. Rodents are great at fitting between areas where eaves meet your roof or between shingles on the roof. Because of this, you need to check everything.

Examine Inside And Out
After checking the obvious areas of your home for rodent entry holes, it is time to look at the rest of it. Unfortunately, you have to check every single area of your home. If you miss a single entrance, new rodents can come in, giving you an endless issue. Remember that sometimes the holes will have been there already when the rodents arrived but these animals can also chew a hole in soffit vents, vent screens, or cap plugs on the roof to get inside.

Look For Hints
You can also let the rodents themselves guide you to find their entry holes. Think about where they are making then most noise and then look for an entrance in that area. You can also look for other signs that rodents have been in the area, such as droppings, chewed items, or unusual dirt tracks.
